35 år fyllda och med bara några månader kvar att leva komponerade Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) vad som skulle bli hans sista konsert: klarinettkonserten i A-dur. Musiken är elegant, lätt och lekfull, men som alltid hos Mozart finns också stråk av allvar, framför allt i den första satsen. Klarinettkonserten är intim till sitt uttryck, och utöver de häpnadsväckande partierna för klarinetten finns passager där andra instrument träder fram: lyssna till exempel på den avslutande delens vackra samtal mellan blås och stråkar. Konserten fick sitt uruppförande i Prag i oktober 1791 med Mozarts gode vän och frimurarbroder Anton Stadler som solist, och fortfarande är det ett av de oftast framförda styckena för klarinett som finns.
Solist med Norrlandsoperans symfoniorkester är klarinettisten Christoffer Sundqvist. Sundqvist har framträtt med orkestrar över hela Europa och har också ett särskilt intresse för samtida nordisk musik. Han har tillägnats över tjugo nyskrivna verk komponerade av tonsättare som Magnus Lindberg, Erkki-Sven Tüür, Aulis Sallinen och Sebastian Fagerlund.
Vidare längs den musikhistoriska stigen möter vi Igor Stravinskij (1882–1971), känd för många som musikhistoriens store revolutionär. Det beror inte minst på Våroffer – den mytomspunna baletten som ska ha varit så chockerande att publiken lämnade salongen vid premiären i Paris 1913. I sin bok Musikalisk poetik från 1942 avfärdade Stravinskij dock att han skulle ha haft för avsikt att spränga gränser, och skrev: ”Man gjorde mig till revolutionär mot min vilja.”
Ett musikaliskt exempel på detta motsägelsefulla drag hos Stravinskij är baletten Pulcinella, som precis som Våroffer uppfördes av danskompaniet Ryska baletten. Musiken i Pulcinella skiljer sig dock mycket från Våroffer. Här blickar Stravinskij bakåt, och tar bland annat intryck av commedia dell’arte, den italienska teaterstilen från 1500-talet. Som namnen på de åtta satserna visar är musiken också inspirerad av barockens danser. Själv skrev Stravinskij att Pulcinella var ett ”utforskande av förgångna, en uppenbarelse som möjliggjorde allt jag senare skapade”. Konsertsviten med samma namn som baletten hade premiär i Boston den 22 december 1922.
Ungefär samtidigt som Stravinskij skrev sina tidiga baletter befann sig Béla Bartók (1881–1945) på en resa i Transsylvanien för att samla in lokal musik. På tretton dagar antecknade han inte mindre än 209 melodier, och materialet blev utgångspunkten för hans pianostycke Danser från Transsylvanien. I stycket använde Bartók fem originalmelodier som han antecknat vid möten med folkmusiker, bland annat två säckpipespelare och en romsk violinist. Danser från Transsylvanien gjorde han senare om till en orkesterversion, med premiär 1932.
I dialog med musikhistorien går också kvällens första stycke, Subito con forza, komponerat av den sydkoreanske tonsättaren Unsuk Chin (född 1961). Chin skrev stycket 2020 som en hyllning till 250-årsfirandet av Ludwig van Beethoven. Den italienska uttrycksmarkeringen subito con forza betyder ordagrant ”plötsligt och med kraft”, och innebär att det sker en plötslig övergång från en textur till en annan i musiken. Just detta menar Chin är typiskt Beethovens musik: ”Det som särskilt tilltalar mig”, har hon sagt, ”är de enorma kontrasterna: från vulkanutbrott till extremt lugn”.
Dirigent för konserten är Arnaud Arbet, som även ledde orkestern under Norrlandsoperans produktion av Jacques Offenbachs Hoffmans äventyr 2022.
